Anchored by Experience: Jeanne Socrates Upgrades to a Vulcan on Her Record-Breaking Journey

From the Rocna Original to the Vulcan Galvanised, Jeanne Socrates continues to trust Rocna anchors on her world-record solo voyages.

At 81 years old, Jeanne Socrates is not only defying age stereotypes—she’s sailing past them. The oldest person to complete a solo, nonstop, unassisted circumnavigation of the globe via the Southern Ocean’s Five Great Capes, and the first woman to sail solo nonstop from North America, Jeanne’s story aboard SV Nereida is one of extraordinary endurance and seamanship.

After years relying on a 15kg Rocna Original anchor—which she credits for saving her boat more than once—Jeanne made the switch to a 20kg Vulcan Galvanised anchor in early 2024 while docked in Whangārei, New Zealand. The Vulcan was supplied with the help of long-time Rocna creator, Peter Smith, and the Burnsco Whangārei team, who met Jeanne bright and early at the store to deliver the anchor before opening hours.

“I’ve now used the Vulcan several times, and I’m impressed by the way its shape enables it to drop so beautifully without any initial pushing,” said Jeanne. “It stows away with ease on retrieval—so far it has come up cleanly over the bow roller without any need for me to help it. The holding seems to be at least as good as my trusty Rocna showed itself to be over several years. I’m very happy with the Vulcan, just as I have been with the Rocna.”

Her legendary Najad 380, Nereida, is now outfitted with a longer chain for deeper anchoring flexibility as she continues cruising the Pacific. Jeanne’s route has taken her through New Zealand and now toward Australia, as she prepares for her next adventure.

A Living Legacy on the Water

Jeanne is more than an ambassador—she’s living proof of what it means to trust your gear completely. Rocna anchors have been part of her survival and success for years, and her endorsement is a powerful affirmation for the global sailing community.

Why It Matters:

  • Real-world testing: Jeanne’s use of Rocna and Vulcan anchors in extreme and unpredictable conditions speaks volumes.
  • Brand trust:  Jeanne isn’t just using the anchor—she’s staking her safety on it.
  • Community connection: she remains a beloved figure in marinas from Opua to Australia.
