About Your Rocna or Vulcan Anchor
The Rocna Original, Rocna Mk II, and Vulcan anchors are advanced, fast-setting, and high-holding anchors developed in New Zealand, designed to outperform older models and suit a wide range of seabed types.
Key Features:
- Universal design for various seabeds
- Large fluke area for superior holding power and quick setting
- Reliable in diverse environments, including challenging seabeds like weed, kelp, and grass
- Resistance to roll-out under heavy loads and self-righting capabilities
- Practical design for easy storage and minimal movement on the bow
- High strength with no moving parts that wear out
Rocna Original and Rocna Mk II Anchor Features:
- Roll-Bar (Original) / Roll-Foil™ (Mk II): Ensures proper setting orientation and eliminates the need for ballast, allowing a larger fluke and better weight distribution. It reinforces the fluke and aids handling.
Vulcan Anchor Features:
- Roll-Palm™: Replaces the roll-bar, aiding self-righting and providing additional strength. Uses ballast efficiently for better performance.
How to Use Your Rocna or Vulcan Anchor
To ensure the best performance and safety, it’s important to follow proper procedures when using and securing your Rocna or Vulcan anchor. This section provides essential information on how to attach the rode, deploy and recover the anchor, and maintain it in different conditions.
Shackles and Attaching Rode:
Use a large shackle to attach your chain, ensuring the pin fits through the chain end-link. For anchors 15 kg (33 lb) and above, use tested forged stainless steel shackles. Secure the pin with stainless steel or Monel seizing wire to prevent loosening.
Swivels:
Swivels reduce rode twist and aid in anchor retrieval. Ensure the swivel is rated for the chain’s breaking strength and install with a few links of chain between the anchor and swivel. For Vulcan anchors, never attach the swivel directly to the shank.
Rode:
Use certified chain, ideally G40 or stronger, for durability and to prevent your boat from sailing around the anchor. Polyester and nylon rope are options and it should be premium 8- or 10-plait rope for ease of handling.
Launching and Recovery:
The Rocna and Vulcan are designed to self-launch from bow rollers. Ensure the roller diameter is large and consider using a twin-roller system. When recovering, ensure the anchor is positioned correctly to avoid violent self-righting.
Deploying and Setting the Anchor:
Drop the anchor while the boat is stationary or drifting. Use a 3:1 scope as a minimum, aiming for a 5:1 ratio. Avoid snubbing until sufficient rode has been paid out. In calm conditions, motor slowly backward for setting. If weather conditions are bad, use up to 8:1 scope.
Using Your Anchor in Rock:
Though the Rocna and Vulcan can hold on rock, they are not designed specifically for it. If anchoring in rock, consider using a retrieval line.
Marine Environment Considerations:
To minimize impact on marine life, avoid anchoring on or near live coral, and drop anchors on bare sand or mud where possible. Use a conservative scope to minimize dragging over the seabed.
Chain Stops and Snubbers:
Use a chain stop on larger boats to reduce windlass stress. A rope snubber is recommended with an all-chain rode to absorb shock and reduce noise.
Buoyed Retrieval Line:
For fouled anchors, attach a buoyed retrieval line to the anchor’s dedicated attachment point. This allows you to retrieve the anchor by lifting it backward using the buoy.
Tandem Anchoring (Rocna Original and Mk II only):
In extreme conditions, use a second anchor attached to the tandem anchor point on the primary anchor. This method requires specific setup instructions to avoid failure.
Securing the Anchor When Underway:
Ensure the anchor is tightly secured on the bow roller with minimal movement. Use twin rollers or lash the anchor in place for extra security. Do not rely solely on the windlass.
Looking After Your Anchor
To maintain your Rocna anchor’s durability, regular cleaning and care are essential. Both galvanized and stainless steel models benefit from preventive maintenance to protect against corrosion.
Cleaning:
Rinse the anchor with fresh water regularly. For the Rocna Original, rinse the inside of the hollow roll-bar. Avoid stowing the anchor in damp conditions or in contact with absorbent materials. Store it in a dry, well-ventilated area.
Galvanized Models:
The zinc coating protects the steel, but it wears over time and must be re-galvanized when needed. If re-galvanizing, instruct the provider about the breather hole on the Rocna Original roll-bar.
Stainless Steel Models:
The passivation process protects against rust, but avoid contact with rust, organic materials, and brackish water. If scratched, polish with a stainless steel cleaner. For deeper damage, re-passivation may be required using products like Spotless Stainless™ or Grunt Emer-Gel™.
