What if my anchor gets stuck under a rock?

< 1 min read

In most cases, a straight vertical pull will free the anchor once your bow is directly above it. But if your Rocna gets lodged under a rock or is heavily set in hard seabed (like clay), here’s what to do:

  1. Motor forward while retrieving the rode until the bow is over the anchor.

  2. Don’t strain the windlass or your back—let the boat help you.

  3. If there’s swell, take in a few inches of rode every time the bow dips. After a few cycles, the boat’s upward motion will work the anchor free.

  4. If it’s calm and there’s no swell, cleat off the rode and gently motor past the anchor to pull it free from the opposite angle.

This situation is uncommon—a vertical pull is usually enough—but these techniques will help in tougher conditions.
