What is the best way to set a Rocna or Vulcan anchor?

How Do I Set My Rocna or Vulcan Anchor for the Best Performance? #

Both Rocna and Vulcan anchors are designed to set quickly across a wide range of seabeds. However, to get the best results, it helps to follow a few specific techniques:

1. Use a Proper Shackle — Skip the Swivel #

  • Attach your anchor directly to the chain using a load-rated shackle.

  • Insert the shackle body through the anchor’s shank, and the pin through the chain.

  • Use the largest shackle size that fits your chain.

  • Avoid swivels — they can reduce strength, aren’t usually needed, and on the Vulcan, may add too much weight to the shank and affect performance.

2. Don’t Drag the Anchor to Set It #

  • Older plough-type anchors required dragging to set — not the case here.

  • Avoid pulling or dragging the Rocna or Vulcan before enough scope is out. These anchors are designed to set immediately when deployed correctly.

3. Deploy Scope Correctly #

  • Drop your anchor with an initial scope of at least 5:1 (water depth + height of anchor roller x 5).

  • Don’t let the anchor drag on the seabed until you’ve deployed at least 3:1 scope.

4. Let the Boat Set the Anchor (Not the Engine) #

  • Let wind or the boat’s backward momentum set the anchor naturally.

  • Use only low engine revs to position the boat — don’t reverse hard on an unset anchor.

  • Once the rode tightens and you feel the anchor catch, you can apply up to 25% engine power to finish the set.

  • Avoid full power until the anchor has had time (a few hours) to settle fully into the seabed.

5. Clean the Anchor Before Re-setting #

  • If you need to reset the anchor, always rinse off any mud first.

  • Mud buildup on the shank can interfere with proper setting on the next deployment.

6. Adjust Scope Based on Conditions #

  • After the anchor is set, you can reduce scope to 3:1 in tight spaces while still retaining around 90% holding power.

  • If weather worsens, increase scope to 7:1 for maximum holding.

Use this technique, and you should get an instant set every time.
